She had her own room, unlike her brothers who had to share with each other, and she had 8 people looking out for her welfare, but at the same time that sort of close coddling got stifling, and Ginny never did like to be coddled. She adored her brothers and always strove to be just like them or at least be treated just like them, but often she had to fight to do so. “You’re too young,” her parents always told her. “Maybe when you’re older.” But no matter how old she got, it was never old enough. Another admonition she always got, mostly from her brothers, was, “You can’t do that, you’re just a girl.” Such things only made her more determined to prove them wrong. As a result, Ginny grew to be strong and resolute, unwilling to back down.

With Voldemort’s ascension into power, however, she’s had to learn to restrain her natural sense of self-righteousness and her desire to do what’s right. There still is that, but she’s much more careful about how she exercises these days. She’s well aware of the danger of being constantly within wand’s reach of the Dark Lord himself, and while she refuses to given into despair or bend to his wishes, she’s learned the value of keeping her mouth shut.

Background
Ginny Weasley was born into a large and boisterous family situated in Ottery-St.-Catchpole in Devon. Although she received her early schooling at home, she was never at a loss for company.

As the youngest in the family and the first Weasley girl to be born in several generations, Ginny held a special place in the hearts of her parents and her brothers. Her father adored her, and her mother loved her dearly. Due to her mother’s happiness at having a child to whom she could pass on all her domestic expertise, Ginny’s home schooling consisted of numerous household skills in addition to the groundwork she’d need to attend Hogwarts.

Her brothers all treated her with various degrees of fond indulgence. Bill and Charlie were in Hogwarts by the time she came along, but whenever they came home they would regale a captivated Ginny with tales of their exploits. To Ginny, the school was a world of adventure and wonder, where intrepid heroes continually matched wits against cruel grounds keepers and crafty prefects in search of mysteries and late night snacks. For as long as she’d been able to understand her brothers’ stories, she’d wanted it to be her turn to go to Hogwarts.

Percy was next to go, and Ginny missed him dearly when he did. For all his pomposity, Percy had always been the most reliable brother in Ginny’s eyes. He’d been there for her from the start, and he was the one she ran to when she had a problem that she didn’t want to be mocked about.

For fun and mockery, she had Fred and George, who saw her as their mascot and took it upon themselves to teach her the art of pranking. Those skills certainly served her well when she wanted to do something that her often overprotective brothers wouldn’t let her do, like fly on a broomstick or follow them on their adventures. She took to those skills so well, in fact, that she still surprises her brothers with them.

And Ron...Ron was her favourite, although she’d never admit it to him. Ron was closest to her in age, the one she played with most, and the one person that she considered to be all hers.

She'd never had anything of her own; even growing up the only girl in a family of nine meant that books and toys had to be shared. Even some of her robes, up until a few years ago, had been hand-me-downs from her brothers. She'd considered Ron hers, but then he, too, took off to Hogwarts and found new friends, friends that didn't include her. Friends like the Boy Who Lived, whose emerald gaze never passed over her with more than a dim recognition that she was his best friend's sister.

And then she went to Hogwarts, and she found someone to be her very own. His name was Tom.

Ginny's first year at Hogwarts was nothing like what she'd expected or imagined. After hearing so much about this magical place from her brothers, she was beside herself with excitement when it was finally her turn to go. But instead of the adventure and fun that she dreamed about, her first year at Hogwarts turned out to be a nightmare.

It all started with the diary she found among her textbooks, a diary that she thought her father had snuck in as a treat for her. She could still remember the girlish excitement with which she wrote her first words and the fascinated glee in which she discovered that there was someone in there, someone that no one else know about. Someone who was all hers.

He was so charming, so understanding, so tragic, and she was so young, so trusting, so desperate for a friend to call her own. She thought she could show her brothers that she could get friends on her own and not have to tag along all the time. She thought she could show Harry Potter that someone just as interesting and much more handsome would be interested in her. She thought she could help Tom escape the diary that he’d been so cruelly trapped in. And then Tom told her how to get into the Chamber of Secrets, and then she didn’t think about anything at all, except mysterious blood and petrified students and terrifying lapses of memory.

It took Harry Potter to rescue her and vanquish Tom’s imprint, but by then Ginny was in no shape to appreciate his heroics. She was too ashamed, too guilt-ridden and too angry about what she did. Although her involvement with the basilisk was kept quiet and her classmates were none the wiser for it, it wasn’t until well into her second year that she was able to recover enough on an emotional level to enjoy being at Hogwarts.

Once she did, however, things went much more smoothly. She remained on the periphery of her brothers’ social groups for the next few years - by then she truly did have friends (and later boyfriends) of her own, although she never disassociated from them completely. She was too fond of them for that.

It was through these connections and her own desire to set things right that she joined Dumbledore’s Army and argued for the chance to help rescue Sirius. In Ginny’s mind, there was simply no question of staying behind, and even if her passionate speech had not convinced Harry to change his mind, she would have gone anyway. Despite having been taken out by a broken ankle during the fight, Ginny was fiercely proud of having been involved.

Her fifth year was one of her better ones, despite the rising threat of Voldemort and his Death Eaters: she made it onto the quidditch team, finally got the boy she’d always loved, and even managed not to mess up her OWLs. All that came to an end, however, after Dumbledore was killed and the world was plunged into all-out war.

Ginny fought beside her friends and family despite all her parents’ and brothers’ attempts to shield her from the worst of it. She was doing pretty well, too – with the inventiveness that she’d honed over the years of using magic in creative ways to cause mischief, and the raw power behind her magic, she was effective in attacks and raids. While the life was not an easy one, it was bearable.

But that changed when Harry was killed. Ginny had been there; she’d seen Voldemort appear and she’d watched as he and Harry went head to head on an all-out duel. She’d tried to get to him, to help him, but she wasn’t fast enough: by the time she got there, both were gone. She didn’t remember much else after that, aside from a lot of screaming and blood. She managed to get away, but everyone was scattered. She managed to find a few other Order members, scattered and bloodied and broken, but it wasn’t long before she was captured and taken to Lord Voldemort himself. Since then, she’d been working as his slave, living in constant fear – but she hasn’t lost her hope. She’s just biding her time, waiting for the time that the rebels could come together again and take down Voldemort’s new regime.
